What is a Virtual Private Server?
A virtual private server (VPS) provides the same benefits of a dedicated server at a lower cost. The cost savings comes from not having to purchase a physical machine or pay monthly fees to lease a dedicated box. A VPS provides root access, server reboot capabilities, dedicated (virtual) hard drive with a complete UNIX (Linux) file system, dedicated memory (RAM), IP addresses, and much more.
VPS technology has been available on mainframe computing systems for many years now. The idea was to buy one very, very powerful dedicated mainframe machine, and to partition it into many virtual machines, each running their own operating system. Each customer gets one virtual machine, which looks, feels and acts like their own dedicated server.
Recently, technological advances have allowed this same concept to be deployed on common Linux systems running on x86 architecture. We provide the "mainframe" and you buy the virtual machine, at a significant cost savings to buying a dedicated machine of the same power.
VPS hosting provides the ultimate middle-ground between standard shared hosting and full dedicated server hosting.
With traditional dedicated server hosting, not only are monthly server fees and hosting services more pricey, but, you are also responsible for managing all aspect of the physical machine. In a VPS environment, we manage the physical machine and we handle all of the hardware/software updates for the physical server.
In a typical shared hosting environment, other users on your “shared” server can affect the performance of your website. With VPS hosting, each server has its own dedicated resources and operates independently of other servers. A VPS customer also has the ability to install their own applications and customize the installation of the operating system to better enhance their online presence. Another added benefit is that VPS platforms also provide the opportunity to host multiple websites which would allow you to resell web hosting services without any additional software.
